Over the coming weeks I would like to start by writing some articles that will introduce you to some basic concepts from neuroscience. Particularly I will focus on concepts that will help you understand your brain better and why we do what we do at Transform YOUR Brain. Initially the concepts I will cover will be:
- Neuroplasticity or Brain Plasticity
- Hebbian Principles
- “Neurons that Fire Together Wire Together”
- “Neurons that Fire apart wire apart”
- Universal law, “if you don’t use it you loose it!”
- Important Structure
1. Mirror neurons
4. Limbic system
- Brain Function and non-linear dynamics
- The whole is greater than the some of it’s parts
Lets start thought with a definition of neuroscience:
Neuroscience is the study of the “Nervous System”, specifically it’s development, structure, and function over your lifetime.
The nervous system is made up of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system is made up of peripheral nerves that run throughout the body including areas like the gut, heart, immune system and (this fact will become important when we look at the mind-body connection).
The most fundamental component of the nervous system is the neuron; we have approximately 85 billion neurons in the brain and one trillion connections. The brain is about 2% of your weight but used 25% of your energy! The human brain has more neurons in the cerebral cortex than any other animal, explaining our increased cognitive capacity and therefor requires lots of energy to function. This creates and interesting relationship between the brain, food and the invention of cooking our food, which we again are the only animals to do so.
The brain is truly an amazing organ and many people believe it is one of the most complex structures on the planet. Below you will find an interesting talk on the brain that you find useful.
Neuroscience has underdone enormous changes over the last twenty years; significant discoveries have been made that have totally changed our understanding of the brain and how to use your brain full potential,
