In my blogs about the Brain and Nutrition we have been discussing how neurotransmitters need specific cofactors in order for the brain to make these neurotransmitters and for them to work correctly. Vitamin B (especially B6), is the cofactor I am focusing on today. For example most people have heard of Serotonin and it’s role in mood stabilization and sleep, in fact many different treatments medial and non-medical target serotonin.
However if you don’t have sufficient B6 in your system (and the other cofactors we have been discussing) the body will not effectively convert tryptophan (the precursor of serotonin) into serotonin. I have not mentioned Vitamin C so far, but it is worth a mention here, as another very important cofactor in this process.
